Head of youthful Herakles facing right, wearing a lion skin headdress with the paws tied at his neck; dotted border. Alexander III the Great (336-323 BC) of Macedon conquered the Persian Empire, creating one of the largest empires in history. To finance his campaigns, he introduced a standardized silver coinage featuring Herakles and Zeus. These popular coins became a universal currency and continued to be minted by his successors across the Hellenistic world long after his death.
